One final interesting thing that I have found, I found where the system registers HID handler DLL's... In the registry, go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\HID\ClientDrivers

  Here you will find an entry for "Keyboard". I believe we want to copy this and create a node called "Gamepad".. values for Flags and IClass are a mystery to me. the DLL referenced goes in the \Windows directory.

There is also the following key, which is a little trickier:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\HID\LoadClients\Default\Default
Here there are directories like 16 (this is a keyboard device, and has a subdirectory named "Keyboard"), 121 (has a "Consumer" subdirectory, not sure what it is. could be the axim touchscreen?)

I discovered from reading bagoj's thread on firstloox (see usb hid section of wiki) that 1_5 is the code for Gamepads, and so it should contain a Gamepad subdirectory.
The subdirectory contains only one key, DLL, which again points to a DLL in \Windows by default.

So a sample Registry snippet might look like this:
(Note - Flags and IClass are copied directly from Keyboard and might change)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\HID\ClientDrivers\Gamepad
  DL      = GPDHID.DLL
  Flags  = 0x10000 (65535)
  IClass = {CBE6DDF2-F5D4-4e16-9F61-4CCC0B6695F3}
  Prefix  = GPD
  RemoteWakeup = 0x0 (unless you want the wiimote to wake up your axim.. :)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\HID\LoadClients\Default\Default\1_5\Gamepad
  DLL = GPDHID.DLL

Note that the GPDHID.DLL stuff is pure voodoo and we can probably name it whatever we want.. But Keyboard had prefix of KBD and the driver was KBDHID.DLL so I'm taking no chances.. :)

I'm going to archive the info in this email directly to the wiki and break it up into an article about the registry hacks. Let me know if this leads you down any fruitful paths.

-justinb
Inline comments might be easier to read...

> Are you sure that Brian's library doesn't need pairing (at least not pairing
> by "code" but pairing with the Bluetooth dongle or the Bluetooth chipset of
> your computer) ?
> Because if I could make it work with my M700, that would be great (I was
> trying to register the HID service by code because the ETEN's Microsoft
> stack didn't want to do it).

I'm pretty sure it needs to be "associated" but not "paired". Pairing involves exchanging 4 digit passcodes, which the wiimote specifically does not support. I am able to get it to associate with the Axim by using a blank passcode.

> I believe that when the LED are flashing on the Wiimote, that means that
> it's trying to pair with a WII console. That should also means that we need
> to find a way to pair the Wiimote "correctly" with the device (the same way
> as it pairs with the console because the LED are not flashing when the
> Wiimote is being used with the console).

I'm not 100% sure we're associating fully with the axim, at least not in both directions. I can get it added to my system as a generic HID device with the MS stack, widcomm not so much. However I sometimes (?) get prompted for an incoming connection that requires a passkey, yet I know the wii uses a blank passkey, if any, and you cannot submit that null value in the form. I wonder if this is an incoming connection the HID service, and we are only getting connected to the outbound control channel (set LED, Rumble, etc). But in the GUI it appears to connect an "Input" service, same as my bluetooth mouse and keyboard, both of which I can get working as system input devices through drivers.

> I hope you will get an answer from TekSoftCo. I have heard of Bluemouse on a
> French forum and waited for the release. I'll give it a try and see how it
> works.

It's buggy as hell! But also very cool if you have a generic bluetooth mouse lying around. They were good enough to point me to their forums, which contains lots of good information and code samples.. in c++ mostly, it appears. Not my first choice but it could show us the way or we could embed it.. we also have bagoj's generic usb hid driver in C++ on the wiki.

> Yes, you're right when you say that we shouldn't have gone so far in the
> bluetooth sdk exploration. I thought we could have found a solution to our
> HID problem in the SDK but it seems that the problem is elsewhere.

you would think... but maybe that's missing the point of HID. Once something is registered as a HID device it seems there's a single interface to access it regardless of how it's physically attached..

> I have done an other experiment : I have bought the Sparkfun's accelerometer
> which is used in the Wiimote
> (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/productinfo.php?productsid=254 ) but
> with a bluetooth module. And this time, instead of a HID service, I had a
> serial port service to "speak" with the device and I managed to get the
> accelerometer information on the Axim. And compared to the wiimote price,
> it's expensive.
>
> In conclusion, the problem is really the Wiimote HID service. But on
> Willi.org, it's specified that it's based upon the USB HID service
> (http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Wiimote ).

> Have you tried any of the others wiimote's drivers
> (http://www.wiili.org/index.php/Wiimote_driver ) and seen if the LED were
> flashing with these drivers ?
> I haven't started looking into these drivers source but maybe it would be
> useful.

The page states that the LEDs will "continue to blink", which worries me a bit, but I'm still encouraged by the fact that it registers as a HID device in the system.

One final interesting thing that I have found, I found where the system registers HID handler DLL's... In the registry, go to

HKEYLOCALMACHINE\Drivers\HID\ClientDrivers
Here you will find an entry for "Keyboard".
